MIRAI Cold 80 T – an air cycle refrigeration machine designed to provide and maintain ultra-low temperatures from -40 °C down to -110 °C in cooling processes in numerous industries, especially in the freeze-drying/lyophilization application.
MIRAI Cold 80 T operates in a closed cycle as an indirect refrigeration system with Air as a refrigerant. The machine comes with a factory-equipped heat exchanger which is optimized to work with silicone oil (also compatible with other working fluids). The system is a standalone unit that requires minimum servicing and maintenance.
MIRAI Cold is a new generation of sustainable refrigeration machines using the air cycle technology (reversed Brayton Cycle).
Air Cycle Technology is based on the heating capability of air during compression and cooling down during the expansion process. Repetition of compression and expansion cycles allows us to reach and maintaining ultra-low temperatures down to -110 °C.

All MIRAI Cold machines are supplied as stand-alone units with required insulation and removable housing cover. The control panel is rated IP66.
MIRAI Cold machines have an integrated control system that allows the customer to communicate with their control system using the digital communication protocols ProfiNET, EtherCAT, EtherNET/IP, and Powerlink, which provides easy integration. The system offers real-time monitoring, data archiving at specified intervals, and remote monitoring as an option.
One of the key features of the technology is, that the turbo-expander is located on the same shaft as the turbo-compressor.
The energy produced during the expansion process is shared by the compressor, thus significantly reducing energy consumption. This feature allows us to reduce energy consumption by 30%, as compared to conventional systems.
Closed refrigeration cycle
In the case of a closed cycle machine, the ultra-cold air is circulating only inside the refrigeration machine in a closed loop. For that reason, closed-cycle machines have to be equipped with an additional heat exchanger for the secondary working fluid. As a result, two closed loops intersecting in the additional heat exchanger inside the refrigeration machine. The primary loop is operating with the Air and the secondary loop is operating with the secondary medium. The best example of a secondary medium would be silicone oil for which MIRAI Cold machines are optimized. There is a possibility to use other secondary mediums as well. The secondary loop is closed by an additional device depending on the application. It could be an oil tank for silicone oil or another heat exchanger.
Applications of closed-cycle machines include process cooling, gas liquefaction, shock freezing, and especially freeze-drying/lyophilization processes. MIRAI Cold closed-cycle machines could be easily retrofitted to freeze dryers that use conventional or outdated methods of cooling as well as a refrigeration unit for brand new installations.
The system requires pressurized air supply from 6 to 8 bar with the air quality of the second category. Dew point at -40ºC. The automated machine pressurization system is available as an optional accessory.

The advantages of properly freeze-dried products are that they do not need refrigeration and can be stored at ambient temperatures. A freeze-dried product retains its original nutritional value, texture, product shape, and taste. It is the fresh product with just the water removed – and nothing added.
